NAP citations for local SEO: listings, not paragraph links

NAP citations are name, address, and phone listed the same way on real local directories and profiles. They are not contextual backlinks and not a guest-post SKU. Worldwide Backlinks quotes citation work in 40+ countries. There is no public citation pack and no invented map-pack percentage. Guest posts from $125 are a different object.

By the numbers

What is a NAP citation, if it is not a backlink?

NAP is name, address, and phone. A citation is that triple written the same way on a listing a local searcher or a crawler might trust: a directory, a maps profile, a chamber page, a professional register. It tells systems the business exists at a place. It is not a paragraph link on a blog. It is not a leftover guest post with a city in the title. Worldwide Backlinks will not invoice a listing as a DR40 contextual href.

The money page is citations. The cleanup essay is citation cleanup and NAP — that URL is repair: duplicates, dead listings, wrong addresses. This URL is the local-SEO object: when consistent listings help, when they do not, and how they sit beside citations vs backlinks. Three pages. Three jobs. We will not 301 them together to stuff a keyword.

There is no invented local-pack study on this desk. Ahrefs found 66.31% of indexed pages have zero external backlinks — that is industry context for why a suburb money page still needs editorial hosts. It is not a citation win rate. We will not print a “rank the map pack” percentage. Founded 2022, 40+ countries, 24-hour quote when we can place the work.

When do NAP citations actually help local SEO?

When the money page is a real location: a clinic, a trade, a branch, a storefront someone can visit. Systems that assemble local results look for agreement on who you are and where you sit. A clean NAP graph is hygiene. It is not a trophy link. If the destination is a national SaaS homepage with no service area, citations are usually the wrong spend. Use guest posts or local SEO backlinks instead.

When the current listings already disagree. Two phone numbers and three address formats split the entity. That is a cleanup brief first, then new citations if the remaining gaps are real. Buying 500 new rows on top of a mess is how you pay twice. Read the cleanup guide before you ask for a blast.

When the country and language match the office. A French chamber listing is not an English paragraph parked on a .fr domain. We pitch live publishers and directories in 15+ languages. We will not pad a report with unrelated ccTLDs to hit a count. Send the markets that matter.

When are citations the wrong product?

When you need a contextual article on a deadline. That is English guest posts from $125, ~2 week typical TAT, 20-day maximum, replacement if the live link drops. When you need a journalist query. That is HARO / Connectively. When you need a wire. That is press releases. When you need a city editorial URL that can rank as a guide, that is local guest posting, not a directory row.

When a vendor is selling “500 citations overnight” as a ranking product. That is a dump. Many of those URLs are thin, duplicated, or already ignored. We quote named sources. We will say no when the brief is a count with no geo and no NAP file.

Hard niches stay honest. Adult, CBD, crypto, and some health categories are blocked on ordinary directories. We will not sneak those onto a general citation sheet. Restricted industries have their own enquire paths. Mixing them into a “local pack” is how the profile starts to look like a farm.

How do NAP citations sit beside guest posts and local editorial?

Citations agree on the entity. Editorial links talk about the service. A suburb plumber still needs both when the money page is a city service URL: listings so the map is not confused, and city hosts so the page is not an orphan. We will not flatten those into one SKU. The public GP card does not become cheaper because the destination is local.

Directory submissions as a leftover product already have a page. This guide is NAP consistency for local SEO, not a second directory lander. If the brief is “submit us everywhere,” we will refuse. If the brief is “make these ten sources match the storefront,” we will quote.

DataForSEO still runs when we treat a listing host as worth reporting. A scraper farm is not a citation because it has a NAP field. SpamBrain already knows that costume. We would rather send you to guest posts than invoice junk rows.

What does a citation quote typically include?

A NAP file you can defend: legal name, display name, address format, phone, URL. A source list we will name. Builds or corrections we can verify. A report of live listings, not a spreadsheet of “submitted.” Recrawl notes when a platform is slow. There is no public citation SKU and no from-price on this page.

Agencies can white-label the report. The listings remain listings. Calling them backlinks on a slide does not change the object and does not change our replacement rules. Replacement applies to work we placed, not to a directory’s CMS.

The form prefills Citations and landing /guides/nap-citations-for-local-seo/ with details Landing: NAP citations for local SEO. Parent: citations. Sibling: citation cleanup and NAP. Hub: /guides/.

How should you brief a local citation enquiry?

Send the storefront NAP exactly as you want it written, the geos, the languages, and a sample of current listings. Say whether you need new rows, repairs, or both. If you also need city guest posts, say so — we will not hide them inside a citation quote. A strategist replies within 24 hours, including no.

If the destination cannot be visited and has no service area, we will route you off this desk. If the NAP is still being invented by marketing, wait. Inconsistent briefs create inconsistent listings.

Richmond VIC. 10,000+ editorial placements describe the outreach desk, not a citation ranking study. We still will not invent a map-pack percentage so the slide looks scientific. The table below keeps listings separate from contributed articles and from cleanup.

Common questions

Are NAP citations the same as backlinks?

No. They are listings. A contextual guest post is a different object with a public card from $125.

Do you sell a 500-citation pack?

No. We quote named sources. A dump is how you buy cleanup next quarter.

Will citations rank us in the map pack?

We will not invent a percentage. Hygiene helps systems agree on the entity. It is not a ranking coupon.

Is this the cleanup page?

No. Cleanup is /guides/citation-cleanup-and-nap/. This page is when listings help local SEO.

Can you build citations outside the country we trade in?

We will not pad ccTLDs to hit a count. Send the markets that match the storefront.

Can agencies white-label the report?

Yes — branded PDF, no extra SKU. Listings stay listings on the slide.

What if we also need city guest posts?

Say so. We will quote citations and route editorial to the guest-post desk. One invoice, two objects.
