What does the data actually show?
In December 2025 Ahrefs published Top Brand Visibility Factors in ChatGPT, AI Mode, and AI Overviews — 75,000 brands. Branded web mentions correlated more strongly with AI visibility than raw backlink counts. YouTube mentions were the strongest correlate they reported, about 0.737. AI Overviews showed a relatively higher Domain Rating correlation than ChatGPT. Ahrefs is measuring association. It is not a work order, and it is not causation.
Google Search Central is blunter. AI features and your website says AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same foundational eligibility as classic Search. There is no special AI markup. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Eligibility is not selection. Overviews often do not trigger. We will not sell a slot in a box Google may not draw.
